7 Questions to Ask When Booking a Fishing Charter

March 3, 2014

You might be itching to go fishing in a different state or want to target a species that you haven’t had much experience with. If this is the case, it’s a good idea to research reputable fishing charter captains. Local charter captains and knowledgeable guides can help you maximize your fishing time — especially when on new waterways.

If the thought of fishing with an unknown guide in entirely new waters makes you a little nervous, don’t fret. There are a few questions you can ask before confirming your trip to help ensure that you’ll have a positive experience.

Questions to Ask When Booking a Charter

  1. Are you certified by the United States Coast Guard? The answer should be yes. This means that the captain or charter guide has logged a specified number of hours on the water, has studied maritime law, is up to date on safety regulations, and has passed an examination to obtain his credentials. You should also check to be sure the captain is properly insured.
  2. What is the capacity of your boat? In other words, ask how many people can the captain or guide legally take given the size fishing charter boat he or she is operating to ensure the boat is a good fit given the number in your party.
  3. What might I expect to catch given the time of year and conditions? Consider the fact that charter guides are accustomed to fishing the same areas on a daily basis. They know a great deal about species migration patterns and feeding habits. If you are hoping to target a particular species, be sure to ask if that species is in season or if it’s reasonable to expect to catch the species given the conditions.
  4. What days will be best to fish given the conditions? Provide the captain with a range of dates if possible. A good day of fishing can often depend on a number of factors such as wind, weather, water clarity or moon phase, so it’s always best to ask which days he or she recommends as being the most beneficial given the conditions.
  5. Can I bring my kids along? Most guides welcome kids, but double check to make sure the captain is aware that you are bringing kids and how old they are. This will ensure that that captain has life jackets and gear that is properly sized for any kids on board. Plus, the captain may want to adjust his fishing strategy so that there is consistent action that will keep the kids entertained.
  6. Can I bring my own fishing rods or fishing gear? If you have a fishing rod that you like to use, ask the captain or guide if that type of rod is suitable given the species you plan to target. In most cases, fishing guides or captains will provide the gear that is best geared to the type of fishing you will be doing.
  7. Do you require a deposit to hold a date? Don’t assume that the captain has you in his or her calendar after a quick phone conversation. Ask if a deposit is required and how payment is preferred.
