How to Keep a Manicure When You Fish

Fishing can wreck havoc on your nails due to all the exposure to sun, salt and sand. I’ve certainly experienced this first-hand after having my hands in a livewell, baiting hooks, rigging lines and handling fish.

Check out these tips on how to maintain a manicure despite the harsh outdoor elements:

  • If you know you’re going to be fishing for several days in a row, look into shellac nail polish. Don’t hesitate to request custom designs.
  • If you can’t do shellac, or want to keep costs down, just use a light shade of pink or go with a French manicure. Darker colors are harder to maintain, chips are more evident and you risk a messy look.
  • Keep your nails at a shorter, active length. By keeping your nails shorter, they are less likely to chip, break or get snagged.
  • Apply a non-chip clear top coat each morning before hitting the water or beach.
  • Use SolarOil or Vitamin E oil over your top coat to keep nails and nail beds moisturized.
  • Apply an SPF 30+ sunscreen to the tops of your hands.
  • Apply a hydrating hand cream at night before going to bed.
