Why Does My Double Uni Break?

August 28, 2012

My double uni’s are my best knot. I love seeing that line slide down and line up on both sides of my braid to leader connection. But they’ve been breaking off sometimes. I started to second-guess my knot-tying-know-how. Luckily, someone gave me this little tip…

Braid can sometimes cut itself if it rubs back and forth enough, and if you’re familiar with a double uni, you know there’s a lot of that going on. So here’s how to fix it…

Start with tying the braid knot around the fluorocarbon leader. Before you begin, double the braid over. I like to give myself 8 or 9 inches. Once you’ve knotted the braid, tie your fluorocarbon around the two strands of braid.

You can learn more about knots from my “Fishing Obi-Wan Kenobi”, Joe Mahler, Essential Knots and Rigs for Salt Water. Buy it online here. I have a knot-tying station set up in my living room. It consists of a cigar box containing Joe’s book, a few hooks, a tangle of braid I had cut off and stuck in my pocket and a couple of one-foot segments of leader I had shoved in my tackle bag.
